Asheville Skates Back to Life: Youth Hockey Returns with New Community Rink, Skate Nights & Events
Asheville, NC — After almost more than a year without a home rink following the devastation of Hurricane Helene, the Asheville Hockey League (AHL) is proud to announce its return — and with it, a brand-new chapter for skating in Asheville.
This fall, the AHL will launch its youth inline hockey season at a newly available skating rink in the RAD, offering a space not only for hockey but for the roller skating community. The rink, which the league and owner of the property will rent for events, will also host public skate nights with a live DJ, birthday parties, and special events in partnership with local skate groups.
“This isn’t just about hockey — it’s about bringing people together again,” said Justin Kaiser, Youth Commissioner of the AHL. “We’ve all been waiting for a place to skate, play, and celebrate. Now, Asheville will have that again.” "What we have repurposed at the old second gear spot at 99 Riverside Drive is amazing, people came together and donated time, materials, and positivity."
The rink will serve as a hub for:
Youth Inline Hockey Leagues – Fall season registration now open for ages 5-9, older kids call Justin
Community Skate Nights – Featuring music, lights, and a live DJ.
Birthday Parties & Private Rentals – Custom packages.
Special Events – Collaborations with local skate crews, fundraisers, and themed nights.
The AHL has been a positive influence in Asheville’s sports community for 25 years, with hundreds of youth and adult players participating each year. Since the hurricane, the league has worked tirelessly to keep the sport alive, traveling to Greenville, SC. The new rink marks a major step in bringing the game — and the joy of skating — back home.
